Our Sustainability Philosophy

Economic Sustainability

Philanthropy in support of initiatives that are not intended to generate a profit creates a danger of discontinuity. Each project should be designed to generate income sufficient to continue conservation activities even if external financial support were to cease abruptly.

Community Engagement

Environmental management achieves its maximum effective-ness when it actively engages residents and neighbors of the project area and confers a net benefit on their livelihoods.

Social Financial Support

The science of climate change tells us that atmospheric carbon dioxide must be controled on a global scale. Thanks to advances in technology and social networks, financial support for sound environmental management can also be drawn globally.

Inherent Value of Natural Capital

The highest and best use of any rainforest, mangrove, peatland or coral reef environment is to be protected in its natural state. We do not require Government support or carbon credits as a precondition of conservation efforts.

Market Forces

Decisions based on the profit motive are not incompatible with sustain-able business practices. Customers are usually willing to pay the cost of conservation and sound environmental management if the supporting arguments are property presented.

Accountability

Management must answer to and take responsibility on behalf of all stakeholders. Technology should be used to make it possible for stakeholders to communicate with each other and participate in decision making in a meaningful way.

Transparency

Reporting is doubly important in environmental management activities because in a very real sense the stakeholders include all members of the planet’s ecosystem. NSE always provides timely and complete reporting, including compliance with new sustainability reporting requirements.
